The L8T FepA mutant was kindly supplied to us in a plasmid by Professor P.E. Klebba.
This part contains the coding region for the L8T mutant of FepA. When expressed, this protein forms an open diffusion channel in the outer membrane of E. coli, allowing molecules of at least 1400Da to pass through. [http://partsregistry.org/wiki/index.php/Part:BBa_I746201 I746201] and [http://partsregistry.org/wiki/index.php/Part:BBa_I746202 I746202] both are devices to express this protein at different levels. This part does not have a promotor, to allow new constructs to easily be made.

The mutants were developed by Dr Salete Newton working in Professor P. Klebba's lab at the university of Oklahoma. They were kindly sent to us by Professor Klebba.

FepA is an outer membrane receptor protein for Escherichia coli involved in the uptake of the ferric enterobactin siderophore. This part is a deletion mutant of the wild type FepA, which has been shown to convert the protein into an open diffusion channel, similar to a porin. It allows larger molecules through than normally would be permitted.
