Uncouplin protein UCP1 is a protein that is found in the mitochondria from brown adipocytes.
The Ucp1 is a DNA part which encodes for a protein called UCP1 which belongs to the uncuopling proteins family.
The uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are transporters, presents in the mitochondrial inner membrane, that mediate a regulated discharge of the proton gradient that is generated by the respiratory chain.
This energy-dissipatory mechanism can serve functions such as termogenesis.
The protein is regulated by acivation and inhibition in the mitochondrion. The proton conductance in UCP1 is inhibited by nucleotides and activated by fatty acids.
