This is a promoter starting the expression of telomerase,an important enzyme to keep the telomere from being shortern during the cell proliferation.Since the tumor cell requires rapid cell proliferation,the content of telomerase is usually detected higher than normal cell.Therefore, we can use the Htert promoter as a cancer specific promoter to start downstream gene expresses only in tumor cell.

The hTert promoter is from genomic sequence of human.
GFP is from the genomic Aequorea victoria.
Since the telomerase is activated in almost cancer cells and we hope hTert promoter can improve the targeting in thermotherapy. To test if the promoter can help the overexpression of selected gene, we make it linked with a GFP. So when we transfect the plasmid in telomerase positive and negative cells, different results can be observed, which means we can make sure the promoter is working, when GFP is seen in cancer cells instead of negative ones.
