This results in reduced or completely eliminated expression of the CI repressor gene, depending on the strength of the promoter used to control expression. This gene is designed to be used in conjunction with another ribonuclease which targets and degrades CI repressor mRNA. The two genes target different parts of the mRNA. If expressed together, the ribonucleases bind to each other with higher affinity than to the CI repressor mRNA, in theory stopping the degradation of CI repressor mRNA.
