This actuator is based off of naturally occurring contiguous genes in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae which are involved in resistance to arsenic compounds. PHO84 is a phosphate transporter which co-transports arsenate with high efficiency across the cell membrane. In recent studies, overexpression of PHO84 increases arsenate internalization by 60% compared to a wild-type control strain. ACR 1 is required for transcription of genes involved in resistance to arsenic compounds. ACR 2 is the arsenate reductase, converting arsenate to arsenite, which is required for arsenate resistance.
