This system is design to hydroxylate medium-length alkanes (C5-C12). alkB1 codes for an alkane hydroxylating protein. rubA and rubB code for two other proteins to supply reducing electrons. Alkanols derived from this reaction are intermediates as plasticizers and solvents in chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
