Description
CsgD stimulates the formation of biofilms in E. coli by activation of positive determinants of adhesion and repression of negative effectors of adhesion. CsgD gene also encodes a transcription activator the curli subunit encoding cdgBA operon. Because biofilm formation and curli expression are activated by the same gene CsgD, their expression is coordinated. The reason for such coordination may be that since curli's main function is to attach E. coli to a surface, such attachment and other environmental signals may indicate to E. coli that a suitable place is found to establish a biofilm.
