Description
ComE is part of a two-component regulatory system (TCS) that controls competence development in Streptococcus pneumoniae. ComE is the response regulator to histidine kinase ComD. Upon binding and detection of the quorum-sensing peptide CSP, transmembrane receptor ComD autophosphorylates using ATP. Subsequently, cytosolic protein ComE is transphosphorylated by ComD. ComE~P activates the comCDE and comAB operons for expression of late competence genes.
