Description

This gene codes for an outer membrane channel of the bacteria called "porineIV leaky".
The Wild Type version of the porineIV was first described for the release of filamentous bacteriophage f1.
Actually those secretins are quite interesting since their opening are controlled by phages (1).

This leaky mutant of the porine was obtained by Spagnuolo et al.
They used a random mutagenesis of the pIV WT followed by a positive selection for leaky mutants.
Indeed mutants having trouble to stay entirely closed or opened (leaky), were obtained after mutations in the C-terminal secretin family domain; GATE 1 and GATE 2 and in the N-terminal (periplasmic portion) which could be involved in the controlled opening of the gate.

Why is this leaky porine interesting ?
It allows sugar such as tetrahose to move in and out of the bacteria using those gates.

We would like to thank
