Description
This intermediate part (along with a promoter) was designed for ethanol production. The ethanol produced is to be used as an additive for biofuel.
The pyruvate decarboxylase gene converts pyruvate to acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde is then converted to ethanol by alcohol dehydrogenase.

Source
The sequence for these genes is based on Zymomonas mobilis, a microorganism that naturally produces ethanol.
