Description
In B. subtilis strains this part can induce the synthesis of surfactin, a lipopeptide with an antimicrobial activity and a powerful surfactant.
Notes
This part contains an Bacillus xylose inducible promoter, a RBS for Bacillus and the sfp gene. It can be used to induce surfactin production in Bacillus subtilis strains. However, the sfp gene does not code for the surfactin; it codes for an enzyme which catalyzes the synthesis of the lipoprotein surfactin.
In order to overinduce the sfp production and therefore the surfactin synthesis in B. subtilis strains the culture media should be supplemented with xylose.
Source
The sfp gene was isolated from many B. subtilis strains (for example ATCC 21332).
