Description

This enzyme is an oxygen dependent NADPH-dependent monooxygenase that adds hydroxyl groups to the beta-ionone rings of beta-carotene (beta, beta-carotene) to form zeaxanthin (beta, beta-carotene-3,3'-diol). Zeaxanthin is one of two primary xanthophyll carotenoids contained within the retina of the eye that aids the eye in seeing.
