Description
CD154 is a protein that is normally expressed on the surface of T cells. It regulates B cell function by ligating to CD40, a receptor on the B cell surface. Stimulation of CD40 with CD154 promotes the proliferation and differentiation of naive B lymphocytes into plasma and memory B cells, facilitating a humoral response. The CD154-CD40 interaction generally also results in the upregulation of costimulatory molecules, the activation of antigen presenting cells, the priming of T cells, and the activation of T cell mediated effector functions. The CD154 protein provides us with a tool for stimulating the immune system, a mechanism that can be used to learn more about the specific interactions in the humoral response system and also to enhance the effectiveness of immunotherapy.
