Description
This gene encodes a transcription factor AlkS, which activates alkane degradation operon. AlkS self-regulates its expression. In the presence of alkanes, AlkS forms AlkS-hydrocarbon (AlkS-HC) complex which downregulates pAlkS1 and upregulates pAlkS2. AlkS-HC complex activates pAlkB which is responsible for expression of alkane degradation operon.
Notes
We cannot separate pAlkS1, pAlkS2 and AlkS gene because of self-regulatory system.
