Description

This translational unit is composed of delta9, delta 12 and delta 15 desaturase genes with RBS for each of them. Desaturase introduces a cis-carbon double bond to fatty acid carbon chain. ∆ 9 desaturase introduce double bond to stearic acid at the carbon 9 position to produce oleic acid. ∆12 desaturase introduce double bond at carbon 12 of oleic acid so to produce linolenic acid. At the end, ∆15 desaturase convert linolenic acid into alpha-linolenic acid by adding a double bond at carbon 15.

Notes

The desaturase genes in plasmids were introduced into E. coli for amplification. The final construct includes iGEM provided RBS (BBa_B0034).

Source

All the desaturase sequences are derived from the Synechocystis sp. but optimised for the expression in E. coli.
